When Phil Solem met up at longtime pal Danny Wilde's Southern California garage/studio, there were no great expectations. Solem had been in and out of a few bands and Wilde spent much of the 80s achieving moderate success as a solo artist, but his most recent album had flopped. So the duo that had been partners in the band Great Buildings in early 1980s were just writing some songs and recording a few demos in the spring of 1990. |

| With the help of drummer Pat Mastelotto, Phil and Danny recorded a 13 song demo and were shopping it around. The thought was that they would either end up writing songs for other musicians or perhaps a label would sign them to record an album of their own. But when Atco Records heard the demo, they were so impressed that they signed the duo and insisted on releasing the demos 'as is', and The Rembrandts were born. The first single, Just The Way It Is, Baby became a Top 20 hit in every country where it was released, including the US, where it reached #14 on the singles charts. Along with help from the follow up single Someone, also a Top 40 hit, the album landed in the Billboard Hot 100. The fact that almost 20 years later, the album still sounds fresh and relevant is a credit to the duo's abilities as both master craftsmen and world class songwriters. Just The Way It Is Baby is still the perfect pop song, the harmonies on Buring Timber and Follow You Down are still unmatched, and New King is more relevant in 2008 than ever. But for 1990, Phil Solem and Danny Wilde were generating some buzz. The Rembrandts would tour for more than a year before heading back to the studio (Wilde's garage, of course) to record again.
