The long awaited 'The Rembrandts Greatest Hits' features 20 original recordings that date back to Solem & Wilde's first band together, Great Buildings. Its a great way to start things off, with Hold On To Something and Maybe It's You. Hopefully the rest of the album Apart From The Crowd will someday see a CD release. From there, its a healthy dose of The Rembrandts debut album. The hit singles Just The Way It Is Baby and Someone are here, along with a few others including the underrated Follow You Down. Their second album, Untitled, is represented by the minor hit Johnny Have You Seen Her and the popular Rollin' Down The Hill.
Five songs from the multi-platinum LP are here, including I'll Be There For You, This House Is Not A Home, and the rocker April 29. They've also included three tunes from the Wilde 'solo' album Spin This. Originally credited to Danny Wilde + The Rembrandts, the lack of Phil Solem effectively makes this a solo effort. We get the two tracks with gorgeous arrangements by Van Dyke Parks and Long Wa lk Back, co-written by Gin Blossoms' Jesse Valenzuela. Finally, a couple songs from Lost Together, including the title track and the catchy Too Late. On the whole, this is a fine collection. It captures all the hits, the best of The Rembrandts harmonies, and some of their better rockers. Still, glaring ommissions like Burning Timber, Chase The Clouds Away, and Drowning In Your Tears---songs that capture the real soul of The Rembrandts--are missing, in favor of lesser album tracks. Also, while the Wilde solo tracks are great to have, Untitled and Lost Together are underrepresented. St. Paul, Big Plans, and Long Way To Go, along with the others mentioned, would make this a true 'Greatest' collection.
